Absolutely! Two regular‑sized people can carry it.

Is it difficult to hook up? How do I hook it up?

Not at all. First install the vent pipe (through the wall or ceiling). Then connect the propane (a standard 5‑gal barbecue tank works) and the 12 V battery and/or 120/240 VAC power cords.

How long does it take to install TinyJohn?

With two people, you can install it within a couple of hours. It can also be done solo or by a local handyman/contractor.

Can ECOJOHN go completely off‑grid?

Yes! TinyJohn only requires a 12 V DC battery and a small propane tank.

What type of power does TinyJohn use?

Can I hook it up to propane?

How long is a burn cycle?

For a regular gas TinyJohn, about 45 minutes for a liquid flush and about 1h 15 min for a waste flush. Electric models run slightly longer; XL models are faster (30–45 min).

If it’s in a burn cycle, can I use it?

Yes. Opening the lid stops the cycle instantly; closing it restarts the cycle.

How many people can use it immediately after one another?

4–5 people can use the regular TinyJohn back‑to‑back; 8–10 users on the XL model.

Does the vent stack or chimney get hot?

It can feel warm—exhaust starts at ~220 °F and exits at around 150 °F—but it won’t burn you.

How often do I need to empty the ashes?

If used daily by two people, check ashes every 3–4 weeks. Also inspect ash chamber and catalytic converter whenever you refuel.

How do I clean out the ashes?

Open the front access panel, pull out the tray, dump ashes in yard or trash, and vacuum out residue if needed.

Do I need to clean the bowl of my ECOJOHN?

Yes. The removable bowl can be cleaned easily; liners are provided to help with cleanliness.

Do I need to change liners with every use?

Yes—a new liner is required for every use and is incinerated during flush.

Can I use it with no water hookups?

You can vent through the back with an elbow and run it up the wall indoors or outdoors, or cap it horizontally—common in RV or van setups.

Let me start by saying everyone I've dealt with at ECOJOHN has been friendly and helpful.

I ordered my unit on 6/23/2025 and was told it would be 2 to 3 weeks before delivery. The unit did not arrive until 7/23/2025 - 4 weeks. I was told that the item was delayed do to a fan failure found during testing and that the part was out of stock. I was offered some extra liners for the delay. When the unit arrived it felt, sound like something was moving around inside the unit. When I unpackage the unit I found the ash can afloat and all of the retaining hardware floating around in the bottom of the unit. I figured out how to assembly the items. I went through the initial setup procedure and the unit worked properly except that the burn time on the display was approximately ten minutes longer than stated in the operating manual. The next day the unit failed to ignite. After contacting ECOJOHN I was given a 'Hard Start" procedure which cleared any error and the unit operated properly. At this time the unit has only been operated the two/three times. Next weekend my family will be at camp and hopefully the unit operates as designed. I just concerned with an damage the unit may have incurred during shipping with the loose ash can. I hope the unit gves me years of carefree service

VERY VERY Pleased with ECOJOHN products

We love our TinyJohn XL. We are off grid in Colorado mountains and it works perfectly. They are very responsive with supplies and to respond when assistance is needed. We will always have a an ECOJOHN product. We have been using ECOJOHN toilets for 9 years and are very happy.

TinyJohn XL for our cottage

We were debating between a few different brands, but we decided on the TinyJohn XL, made by Ecojohn in Arkansas. The fact that they are made here in the U.S. and my neighbors have been raving about their units (they have the regular TinyJohn), made the decision easy.

I am pleased to say that we are extremely happy with our decision. The install was easy, and their customer support is great. We had a couple of questions after the install, and they were quick to get back to us. We have two 5 gallon propane tanks connected and a deep cycle battery with solar backup.

We went with the XL model rather than the regular because occasionally we have 10 people on the weekend.
